ARENA 1 is proud to present MashUp, a group exhibition curated by Ivan Limas which will open with a reception for the artists on Saturday, September 13. The exhibition runs through October 11, 2008.
As his objective for this exhibition, Ivan Limas has collected a group of artists who deal with their heritage through unorthodox means. These artists are interested in exploring new avenues and dialogues that continuously redefine their identities. Their uses of iconography and unusual materials that may not be relevant to their background are adopted and fragmented in order to play with ideas of history and self- perception.
MashUp artists use polarities in their subjective, personal definitions and then “clash” them to create reaction or new meaning in the resulting works. They employ various devices to question ideas about identity and heritage and they ways in which aesthetics are redirected. All the artists in this exhibition are actively seeking to dodge the “pigeon hole” of identity and they accomplish that in different ways, but they share a common their ideas and methods in flux in order to overcome the fragility of identity, class, and critique in contemporary America.
A typical device employed by the artists in the show is to deal with these inequities through conflicting narratives, which in turn, allow their voices to have a complexity. This approach can vary in degrees from the obvious to odd quirkiness, but for the artists, it is a lifeline that is as useful as their medium. In the end, the objective was to mash up the themes that connect the different artists to each other.
